Home Study Explained

Jobs & Self-Employment

Most pet groomers advise career seekers to start their education by attending on-site schools. There are distinct advantages. On-site schools should provide you with pets to groom hands-on. Your instruction should be structured and timed to complete within a set period of time. You should have an instructor continually evaluating your progress. However, there is much more to consider when selecting a school best suited to your career goals. The definition of "home study" for groomers continues to evolve. Home study programs in various publishing formats exploded around the year 2000. It now includes books, videos and streaming media. Home study still involves hands-on grooming, but you will need to find pets to groom. More important, it's not only for career seekers anymore. Today's professional groomers are wisely investing in continuing education with home study options. No one knows exactly how many pet groomers there are. Reliable estimates range from 80,000 to 120,000 in the U.S. including groomers, bathers and assistants. There are at least 2,500 job openings in the U.S. any day of the year. This website leads you to many of them. Career seekers may find the job market complicated from competing compensation formats, lack of standardization and a plethora of routes into self-employment. We can help.
